As the series progressed, plotlines saw Martin eventually move on to become the host of the talk show Word on the Street, which aired on the small Detroit public-access television station Channel 51.
He retained this position until the series' final episode, in which he and Gina prepared to move to Los Angeles, from where his show would be syndicated nationally.
This was often done as a plot device or comic relief.
Season four was the last season to feature Lawrence as multiple characters on a regular basis.
Essence.com: Are you living single now or do you have a beau? A.: (Laughs) I'm seeing someone, but I ain't sayin' who. I see the red carpet as work and I don't bring my men to work. That's how that happened and everyone started saying, That's Tichina's new man.' Essence.com: What's the craziest rumor you've heard about yourself? It makes it a lot easier when you have someone from the same heritage. I think my stylist was unavailable and I dressed myself, I can't remember, but you couldn't tell me I wasn't looking good and they said something like, 'We love Tichina, but she looks like Boy George! But it's only when the comments gets vicious that I can understand where folks are coming from about the negativity and hate, but I just don't take myself that seriously. Essence.com: You've also been under the same fire as Tisha and Duane regarding your sexuality. You know you're not famous until someone accuses you of being gay. Essence.com: Why do you think everyone is so fascinated with what celebs are doing behind closed doors? If you don't want to be accused of being an alcoholic, then don't be seen drunk. Unfortunately, you can't control rumors and I don't worry about dispelling any because to do that would mean I'm giving credence to any lies that might be out there about me.
This technique was rarely used in Season 5, which was the final season of the series.
The only characters that appeared in Season 5 were Sheneneh, Roscoe and Elroy.
The explanation in most of the episodes Campbell did not appear in was that Gina was "out on business", though in the two-part episode "Going Overboard" it was stated that Gina had arrived too late to board the boat for the trip alongside everyone else.
Campbell did return to the Martin set to film the two-part series finale of the show under the condition that she would not share any scenes with or interact in any way with Martin Lawrence.
